Homosexuality is one of the major topics in modern society. Many will tell you that this attitude is a fairly new issue: one that has only recently become prominent among individuals. I recently researched the topic so that I might learn what the cause of homosexuality among people, in general, might be. The conclusion I came to is this: No earthly person knows for sure. Heredity is partially speculated to be among the causes just as choice, environment, and parental influence are considered to be viable. I was surprised to find that this topic is one of the things that cutting-edge science is working to discover more about. Just like other issues in science, there is evidence both for and against the notion of natural sexual orientation. The best article that I found was one published by ‘TIME’ and can be viewed here. This article is the only article out of dozens that was seemingly written with an unbiased opinion, therefore is probably more accurate.
Coming from a Biblical standpoint, homosexuality is absolutely wrong. Please continue to read before writing this entry as offensive or condemning.
Leviticus 18:22 – “Do not lie with a man as one lies with a woman; that is detestable.” (NIV)
We could argue that this verse is located within the Old Testament, therefore has no authority in the modern age. Please keep in mind that without the OT, the New really means nothing to us. Just in case we need reference from the NT:
Romans 1:26-27 – “Because of this, God gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural relations for unnatural ones. In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed indecent acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their perversion.” (NIV)
God’s Word clearly defines homosexuality as unnatural. Let’s look at a couple more references, this time to sin as a whole. Since we believe that God created everything, especially human beings. We almost cannot look at any Scripture without taking into account the context of creation.
In Genesis 3, we see mankind rebel against the natural order that God placed. Man gave into sin, instead of relying on God. This means that all sin is unnatural.
Furthermore we also learn in this passage that Sin is a result of man trying to fulfill his desires apart from God.
Romans 5:14- “Nevertheless, death reigned from the time of Adam to the time of Moses, even over those who did not sin by breaking a command, as did Adam, who was a pattern of the one to come.”
Exodus 20:5- “You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the fathers to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me,”
Sin, itself, is hereditary. Romans 5:14 also suggests that there are other ways to sin than simply breaking a command. We can talk about this later. We could also ask what kind of God would punish children for the sins of their fathers? Perhaps this is simply an example of generational sin. This is in the same passage in which God is giving the commandments to Moses is about not placing any other ‘gods’ before God. We know from Genesis 3 that relying on ourselves at all is placing ourselves before God, and according to James 4, is acting in hate toward God. So, because sin is hereditary (much like a disease) everyone born from the seed of Adam (that is everyone that lived aside from Jesus) was, and is, susceptible to this sin. We also have to keep in mind that God says that He will show love to a thousand generation of those who love Him and obey His commandments.
So, homosexuality, according to God’s word and possibly to science, could be hereditary. People will argue that, because it could possibly be hereditary, it must not be wrong or immoral. Please allow me to ask a few questions. Alcoholism is supposedly proven to be hereditary. Does that mean that constantly being drunk is not wrong or immoral in any way? Violence is hereditary. Is it not morally wrong to openly share that violence? On the opposing side of this, over-passiveness is also considered to be hereditary. Is it right for someone to allow themselves to constantly be abused by those with a violent nature?
Though these things can possibly be hereditary, we have a choice to either support them, or not. Those who inherit alcoholism, if they do not drink have a capacity to lower the prevalence of alcoholism in the next generation. This could be God’s reference to punishing the third and fourth generation. Again, science supports God’s word, and God’s word can be used with science. We also have a choice when it comes to homosexuality, we (through the power that God gives us) can be victorious over a sin that may or may not be hereditary.
No matter how we view homosexuality, we can be sure of the above things. Still, we must be careful not to judge but to approach in love. Those people that are outside of our family are not bound by the same law that we are. They choose to be the master of their own souls and therefore will not reside in Heaven unless the declare Jesus as the Lord of their lives. (Romans 10:9) I hope to encourage you in your fight, if this is indeed one of your struggles. It is a very real struggle, just as all other sin. I will be praying for you. Fight the good fight, run the race with perseverance. The Kingdom of Heaven belongs to those who overcome.
