Shattered, a poem

My religion was worthless
because in it I sought my own worth
It wasn’t until, in new birth, I was sought
I could see Heaven from earth

My religion was blinding
because with it I thought I could see
It was never a list of instructions
A mirror it was to be

I kept seeing the world’s fault
her heart beating as black as the sea
With the scales removed in new birth I could see
the one in the mirror was me

I am the dark of the sea
the one who condemns the world
even though the world defines me
O’ wretch that I am and must be

O’ to grace how great a debtor
daily I’m constrained to be
O’ by grace, Lord, how great a Savior
how great a sacrifice and a King

I kept seeing the world’s fault
her heart beating as black as the sea
With the scales removed in new birth I could see
the one in the mirror was me
How great a Savior and King
How great a Savior and King
who shattered this mirror for me
that the kingdom of heaven I’d see
