On October 31, 2021, we are officially launching Douglas Reformed Church. When you come in the doors, you’ll immediately notice an atmosphere that differs from most local churches in the area—from the presence of pool tables and arcade games to the observance of communion every Sunday to table seating to the enjoyment of the bread and wine throughout the service. These things are cosmetic. We have noticed a need for revival in Cochise County, a need for the reformation of the church—which is why we decided to launch on October 31st, Reformation Day.
The official date for the protestant reformation is set on October 31st, 1517, though the reformation began prior to Martin Luther’s posting of the 95 theses at Wittenberg. Since Martin Luther’s questions about majority religion were raised and published by a zealous group of students, men like Calvin, Zwingli, Knox, Melanchthon, Spurgeon, and Sproul defended the doctrine of the Apostles as represented in Augustine against the wiles of human-centered religion. We are not interested in starting a new work, for Christ is not new. Neither are we interested in taking the church back thirty, forty, fifty, or on-hundred years as some traditionalists are interested in doing. We are interested in taking the church back two-thousand years—to Christ and the teaching of the Apostles (cf. Acts 2:42).
Thus, there are a few questions we want to raise in Cochise County to the visible church:
- Why do we teach that people must contribute to their salvation by praying a prayer, being baptized, speaking in tongues, partaking in the eucharists, confessing their sins to priests, doing evangelism, or otherwise working to please God?
- Why do we teach that, once coming to Christ, people must do good enough or give enough money so as to not fall from grace or so as to earn blessings from God?
- Why does the church major on buildings and budgets and minor on the work of the Gospel as already completely finished in Christ alone, as if we need anything more?
- Why does the church provide security in the works of people rather than the work of Christ?
These are the types of questions being raised in 1517. They are in need of answering again in 2021. On October 31, 2021 at Douglas Reformed Church, we will be addressing these four questions. We want to invite all who are interested in hearing the proper gospel to attend and participate in worship with us. Bring food to share if you are able; we enjoy a meal together after each Sunday gathering. Our desire is to see revival take place in Douglas, AZ. Share this event. Come and see the goodness of God unburdened by human religious expectations. May we all come to a proper knowledge of God and His work, be transformed by the renewing of our minds, and be completed according to the good and pleasing will of the Father. Amen.
