After Joseph reveals himself to his brothers, he sends them with Pharaoh’s blessing to retrieve their father and return to Egypt to live. Theologically, the most important detail in this chapter is Joseph’s recognition of God’s providence (v. 7-9). Joseph claims that it is not his brothers who sent him to the land of Egypt but God. God has made him lord of all Egypt in order to preserve a remnant of grain and wealth for the house of Israel—otherwise the house of Israel would be impoverished (cf. v. 11). God cares for His people and works all things together for their good—which is the essential doctrine of providence. God does not desire his people live impoverished, though it may be required for a season on this earth. Through the famine, God provides a remnant. It seems He does so through tribulation on this earth.
